Military Museum Scotland is proud to announce a new international partnership with the World War II Legacy Foundation Museum in East Hartford, Connecticut, USA.

The two museums have formally become Twin/Sister Museums, creating a new transatlantic partnership dedicated to preserving military history, supporting education and remembrance, and honouring the legacy of those who served.

The partnership has already attracted attention across the Atlantic, with Military Museum Scotland featuring on the front page of the 27th August edition of The Gazette in East Hartford, followed by a full article inside the newspaper.

Connecting military history across the Atlantic

Although separated by thousands of miles, Military Museum Scotland and the World War II Legacy Foundation Museum share a remarkably similar story and ethos.

Both are independent, non-profit museums run entirely by volunteers, and both developed from mobile museums before establishing permanent collections. Most importantly, both share a commitment to education, remembrance and supporting veterans.

The new partnership will allow the museums to explore loans of artefacts, collaborative programmes and joint research projects, helping visitors on both sides of the Atlantic gain a greater understanding of the experiences and sacrifices of those involved in global conflict.

For Military Museum Scotland, it also provides an exciting opportunity to bring an even greater international perspective to our collection and educational work.

A shared ethos

Military Museum Scotland Founder and Manager Ian Inglis said:

“Both of our museums share a common ethos, as our main focus is Education, Remembrance and supporting Veterans in need.”

Ian added that he was “proud and honored” to welcome Gary Roy, Marianne Mihalyo and the WWII Legacy Foundation Museum as a Sister Museum to Military Museum Scotland.

Gary Roy, Co-Founder of the World War II Legacy Foundation Museum, said the partnership would help expand its educational reach, connect visitors with an international perspective on military history and enhance its international displays.

An exciting new chapter

This partnership represents another important step forward for Military Museum Scotland and demonstrates how a volunteer-run museum in West Lothian can build relationships and share military history far beyond Scotland.

We're looking forward to working with our new friends in Connecticut, exchanging ideas and stories and developing opportunities for our two museums to collaborate in the future.
